چکیده
Contact phenomena abound, and play an important role in structural and mechanical engineering. Owing to their inherent complexity, they are modelled by highly nonlinear inequalities. Considerable progress has been achieved in modelling, variational analysis and numerical approximations of contact problems involving viscoelastic and viscoplastic materials. Moreover, it has led to several new types of variational inequalities. We present a summary of a number of recent results on the variational and numerical analysis of contact problems, and a number of numerical examples of engineering applications.

Discontinuous Galerkin methods for solving a quasistatic contact problem
We consider the numerical solution of a nonlinear evolutionary variational inequality, arising in the study of quasistatic contact problems. We study spatially semi-discrete and fully discrete schemes for the problem with several discontinuous Galerkin discretizations in space and finite difference discretization in time. Under appropriate regularity assumptions on the solution, a unified error...
متن کاملNumerical Analysis and Simulations of Quasistatic Frictionless Contact Problems
Contact phenomena among deformable bodies abound in industry and everyday life, and play an important role in structural and mechanical systems. The complicated surface structure, physics and chemistry involved in contact processes make it necessary to model them with highly complex and nonlinear initial-boundary value problems. Indeed, the now famous Signorini problem was formulated as an idea...
متن کاملNumerical Analysis of a Quasistatic Problem of Sliding Frictional Contact with Wear
We consider numerical approximations of a quasistatic problem modeling the sliding frictional contact with wear between a viscoelastic body and a rigid moving foundation. The contact is modeled with the Coulomb's law of dry friction and the wear is described by a version of Archard's law. The variational formulation of the problem consists of a nonlinear evolutionary equation coupled with a tim...
متن کاملEvolutionary Variational Inequalities Arising in Quasistatic Frictional Contact Problems for Elastic Materials
We consider a class of evolutionary variational inequalities arising in quasistatic frictional contact problems for linear elastic materials. We indicate sufficient conditions in order to have the existence, the uniqueness and the Lipschitz continuous dependence of the solution with respect to the data, respectively. The existence of the solution is obtained using a time-discretization method, ...
متن کاملNumerical Analysis of a Class of Evolution Systems Arising in Viscoplasticity
We consider a class of abstract nonlinear evolution systems arising in the study of quasistatic frictionless contact problems for elastic-viscoplastic materials. The variational analysis of such systems, including existence and uniqueness results as well as some properties concerning the behavior of the solution, has been done in 12]. In this paper we consider numerical approximations of this c...
